Time of Dreams: Japan
Time of Dreams: Japan
transforms the imagined world of Japanese art—shaped over centuries—into a multi-sensory experience through the technologies of the Digital Experience Center. The “floating world” of ukiyo-e, the dreamlike beings of yōkai lore, and the aesthetics of Japanese craft culture come together through moving imagery, touch-based interfaces, and hybrid physical–digital installations.
Layered scenes move from cherry-blossom landscapes to forests roamed by yōkai, then to Hokusai’s Great Wave, geishas behind folding screens, Kabuki faces, and the rhythmic dance of samurai. The journey deepens through a soundscape spanning Debussy’s La Mer, Japanese drums, and contemporary Japanese composers.
Throughout the exhibition, touch becomes part of the narrative: the timeline brings eras into focus; digital coloring zones reimagine nature and cultural landscapes; motion-driven projections form a fluid field of images. A touchscreen game reunites fragments, while a kintsugi-inspired approach turns the crack into light without erasing its trace. With 400+ selected works, the exhibition presents Japan not as a theme, but as a time and dreamscape to step into.
